A Look Inside: Eat the Menu

Over 40 kids, and over $250 of McDonalds food... such a fun night.

The purpose of events like this in WyldLife is to give kids a place to be crazy kids, to build relationships between kids and leaders, and for leaders to earn the right to speak into their lives.

While these events just look like chaos, there is actually so much more going on just under the surface!

WyldLife Eats the Menu!!

Matt and Charlie with each teams menu!
Fridays are for WyldLife in Ladera Ranch!

We had our first Friday night Club last night. The game we played was called Eat the Menu! It has become the annual kick-off event for Ladera Ranch WyldLife club.

Last night over 40 kids came to McDonalds ready eat some really delicious and healthy food (there may be a bit of sarcasm there)! We split up into three teams and ordered $250 worth of food. Each team had to race through the food and the team that finished first won.

While this event may seem crazy (it is) and it may be hard to understand the reasoning behind doing something like this, it goes a long way in helping us leaders earn the right to be heard. Having these events where kids are encouraged to do something way out of the norm, but still super fun, helps them to realize that we want them to have fun, be crazy kids, and be themselves. As they begin to see that we aren't trying to change them, and that we genuinely want to be their friends, they begin to trust us. As this happens we get to share Jesus' love with them... and they listen because they know we care about them, and we have earned the right.

The beauty of Young Life and WyldLife is relationship. Leaders build real friendships with kids and then enter into their lives in order to support, encourage, and love. When kids give us permission, we are quick to help direct kids towards better life decisions, build habits that will help them in the future, and introduce them to Jesus, helping them learn what it is like to have a real growing relationship with him.

So, while things like Eat the Menu may seem a bit strange... there are some deeper things happening amidst the chaos.

Ladera Eats the Menu

When WyldLife takes over McDonalds

Sunday night we had our first Club of the year at Ladera Ranch WyldLife! We did an event called "Eat the Menu" at McDonalds. It was a huge success! About 40 kids showed up ready to party, and a disgusting amount of McDonalds was consumed in a frighteningly short amount of time!

It is amazing how powerful laughter can be, and that is one of our biggest tools in WyldLife. We aim to give these kids a place where they can be the messy middle school kids they really are... and be with caring adults in that place. By giving kids a place where they can laugh, have a blast, play games they haven't ever played, and go nuts, we earn the right to enter into their lives and bring the love of Jesus with us.

Club is about building friendships with kids. It is about loving kids where they are at, not asking them to change in order to earn our love. In WyldLife we set out to love and care for kids in the name of Jesus no matter what their response to Jesus is. We pray that every kid comes to meet Jesus, see how truly wonderful he is, and begin a life-long growing relationship with him... but, if that never happens, we aim to love and care for them just the same.

We will be having Club on the following dates this semester: Nov 2, Nov 16, and Dec 7. Club will be on these Sunday nights from 6:30-8. We are still working on locking down a location (hopefully a clubhouse) and will pass that information along as soon as we are set.

Eat the Menu- San Juan Hills Young Life

In each of us there is a desire to break limitations, to accomplish something never done before.  We try to climb the mountain, paint the masterpiece, cook Thanksgiving dinner - a chance to do the impossible.
I challenged 25 high school students to do something amazing, difficult, and ridiculous.  We went to Taco Bell, divided the kids into teams, and promised them that we would be making stories happen.  We ordered heaps of tacos, enchiladas, burritos, empanadas, chalupas, quesadillas, churros, nachos, and every other type of Mexican fast food known to man.  After we gave an equal amount of the feast to each of our three teams, and let them know that only one team would be crowned as winners.  Then, we begun.

Kids devoured mounds of cheese, meat and sour cream.  The tables were piled high with wrappers and used napkins.  At first they ate with incredible speed and excitement.  Within a few minutes, however, they settled in for the long, slow haul to the finish line.  Some students followed the strategy of the tortoise, others went the route of the hare.  Either way, we all filled our bodies with more calories than should be legally acceptable.

In the end, one team won, the restaurant made some money, and all of our our stomachs lost.  The kids all had a wonderful time breaking basic bodily limits, had fun with new friends, and were exposed to YoungLife for the first time.  We were able to build relationships with these students, show them a good time, and briefly tell them that we love Jesus and would enjoy hanging out with them more.  It was a crazy night, and it was the start of something awesome.

Victory is soooooo SWEET!!!
